Employee Spotlight – Janice Kutekila

From intern to professional

As part of our International Women’s Day spotlight series, we are celebrating the women contributing across different dimensions of our business.

This week’s feature highlights Janice Kutekila, whose path with the company began through the internship programme and quickly evolved into a permanent position.

Reflecting on her experience, she describes the internship as both challenging and highly rewarding. The programme exposed her to continuous on-the-job learning and encouraged her to step beyond her comfort zone.

“It was a period of intense learning. I focused on developing my skills while contributing to the growth of the company and my team, and receiving positive feedback from colleagues across different areas was incredibly motivating.

One of her most significant learning experiences came while working as a company site representative during the construction of the Microtunnel, which is a responsibility typically entrusted to more experienced professionals. Despite the challenge, the experience allowed her to gain valuable technical knowledge while working closely with contractors on coordination and reporting activities.

Through the internship, she was also exposed to multiple projects and functions across the organisation, gaining a broader understanding of the energy industry and the importance of teamwork and communication.

Among the moments she is most proud of was presenting the Microtunnel section of the project to the President of Angola.

“Although it is a small portion of the project, it has enormous impact and national relevance. Being chosen to present it, despite my short time in the company, made me feel very proud.”

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue developing her career within the energy sector while also inspiring young people to pursue education and professional growth.

For young women considering applying to the internship programme, her advice is simple:

“Apply and apply again if necessary. Don’t give up. It’s an excellent programme to start your career and an incredible opportunity to learn on the job.”

Outside of work, she enjoys dancing and staying active, even attending dance festivals with friends whenever she can.

Her journey reflects the opportunities that can emerge when curiosity, determination and learning come together.
